Cornwall Design Week - Gered Mankowitz Lecture

Cornwall Design Week - Mankowitz Lecture“The Cornwall Design Week” organized by the Cornwall Design Forum  was starting A few days after I arrived back from Brighton.Whoa! I thought Italy was a design based country!During this week I’ve seen works from local design firms and schools. In the end considering the quality of these works I can think of myself of being quite lucky to live in such a creative and laid-back place as Falmouth: it definitely was worth the jump from the crowded and restless Milan.Yesterday night I went to see the hugely awaited Gered Mankowitz a music photographer that started his career in the sixties and managed to shoot basically every single staple of music history.Gered Mankowitz started at the age of 16 inspired by his father’s friend the actor Peter Sellers who was apparently fond of photography . He started shooting people like Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, Traffic, Free, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix making cover artworks for some of them, and then went on to work in the film industry and with advertising. I won’t continue the list of his works otherwise it’ll take me hours, so just go and check his website. I love photography and I love music. I spent most of my life living with people that will dribble on a Jeff Beck record and go crazy for a random Rolling Stones gadget and yesterday I found myself in front of someone that knew all of them. Now could you imagine my excitement after coming from such a great place as Flash on the Beach to arrive back home and attend such a ‘roster’ of events?Anyway I’ve to thank Amanda Webb who’s behind the curtains of the Cornwall Design Forum that keeps this wonderful community of designers going and that yesterday let me go in even if I couldn’t get any money out of the bank (thanks thanks thanks)!
